It is based on an illustration in a Dutch plate of battlefield trophies captured during the battle of Blenheim in the War of the Spanish Succession. The original artist attributed this flag to the Cologne Regiment Leigois under the colonelcy of M. de Cresse.
In addition to being used during the War of Spanish Succession (1700-1713), this flag may have flown over Cologne troops during the Nine Years’ War (1688-1697) as well.
