Manuscripts from the Far Realm

Manuscripts from the Far Realm

Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild

The instant the apprentice wizard peeled open the covers of that terrible book, her mind was assailed with visions of a dark and distant place: a place of nonsense, a realm of things that should not be. She felt a thousand skittering realities sliding across each other like paper against skin—a myriad of deep and unfathomable eyes turning in her direction, burning away her grasp on her surroundings with their impossible gaze—a throng of tendrils emerging from the book and wrapping around her wrists, wet with a cold and viscous fluid that hissed as it met the air—her head, oh gods, it hurt so much—

She slammed the book shut, cutting short its theater of terror. Bewildered, she looked around at the room, only to find it exactly as she left it. No eyes, no tendrils, no paper-thin realities; it was all in her mind. She slid the book back into the shelf before it could tempt her curiosity again.

In the depths of the planarverse, long past the boundaries of the outermost planes most scholars are familiar with, a convalescence of strange and awful worlds pulse and grow, a cosmic tumor feeding on the fabric of reality—a “multiverse of things that shouldn’t be,” according to the archmage Mordenkainen. This plane, the Far Realm, is the ancestral home of most aberrations, a world suffused with twisted psychic energy and horrors beyond imagination.

Manuscripts from the Far Realm is an exploration of the Far Realm and its abberant masters. This illustrated guide includes:

1. Introduction to the Far Realm

An overview of the Far Realm and aberrations. This section describes how best to travel to and from the strange plane, and what dangers to expect once there.

2. Mental Strain

This section introduces mental strain, a simple mechanic that replaces the Madness rules presented in the Dungeon Master’s Guide. Mental strain emphasizes that even viewing cosmic horrors can harm (or even break) the mind without making stigmatic references to mental illnesses and their symptoms.

3. Psionics

This short section provides a rules-lite system for psionics—the art of harnessing psychic powers with your mind. Any spellcaster can replace their normal spell list with the psionics list, gaining access to strange new spells in addition to their class features.

4. Eldritch Machines

This section describes a variety of eldritch machines—horrifying magical devices a cult of the Far Realm might wield to further their bizarre agenda.

5. Cultists

This extended section is all about cults: where to find them, who they serve, and why they do what they do. It includes a handful of new stat blocks for cultists, extending the danger of your cults beyond the first tier of play.

6. Elder Aberrations

This section introduces six horrifying eldritch beings from the deepest reaches of the Far Realm, pulled from classic works of cosmic horror and from the lore of Dungeons and Dragons. These creatures make exceptional antagonists for your campaigns, from grand finales to recurring villains.
